I have had a similar problem on one of our school lab Macs, a 5260 or 5400, I
think. I also expected to find energy saver the problem but it was not on there.
In despriation, we kept on looking around and found a control panel called
"Screen". It seems to be similar to the old "Brightness" one that used to be on
Classics, but this one was the problem. We have no idea where it came from, but
it was right there and changing settings took care of it.

I have a client whose 6500/275 keeps going to sleep when he leaves it alone
:: awhile. He says it takes up to two minutes to wake back up. I put Energy
:: Saver back into active status and expected to find that it had been
set to
:: sleep before it was disabled. But all options were off, and still the
:: machine is sleeping after a period of inactivity.

Subject: (C) QuickKeys 3.5.3 crashes MacOS 8.5

Dear Digest readers,
Despite CE Software's claims on its web page to the contrary, the QuicKeys
3.5.3 upgrade available from them does not promote MacOS 8.5 compatibility.
In fact it disables the Control Strip, and the Launcher (which are redundant
anyway if it worked), but worse yet, run BBEdit, GraphicConverter, AppDisk
Internet Explorer crash with Type 1 errors and applications quit even when
not activating a macro. It may work with MacOS 8.1 or earlier, but I
wouldn't attempt running it just yet on MacOS 8.5. Disable QuicKeys and
Type 1 errors will disappear.
Oh you might have the occasional Type 1 error, but not because of QuickKeys
but another non-Apple extension getting in the way.

Hope this helps.

Subject: (C) Removable storage

Dear Digest readers,
With removable storage raiding the market of computer peripherals at light
it might seem like the time to get a removable drive of some sort.
Unfortunately most of these drives rely on outdated magnetic media. All
magnetic media have the same problems:

1. The are succeptible to magnetic fields (telephones, modems, monitors,
printers, lamps, keyboards all generate magnetic fields)

2. Dust in the drives

3. Heat/cold

4. being dropped from a table

5. being scratched by the drive head and irreparably damaged if the drive is
shaked any amount or is out of working order.

6. Not being compatible with the majority of Mac owners around let alone
being
compatible with PC owners.

7. Pricey when compared to regular hard drives in repair and recovery. And
also pricey when compared to other removable media that is not magnetic

That brings me to recommending that when anyone really need removable
storage to start looking in the way of CD Recorders and CD-RW, and
DVD-Recorders and DVD-RAM. The price of a single CD that stores 650MB is
now down to under $1 in the U.S. Now granted they can only be recorded
once, but at least for archival and distributional storage purposes they
face none of the problems that magnetic media face. Just about everyone who
has a computer built in the past 3 if not 4 years has a computer that has a
CD-ROM drive that can read both Mac and PC CD-ROMs.

Of course if you need access to a drive that you can frequently write to,
get a regular Quantum, Seagate or IBM external hard disk. The regular hard
disks are vacuum sealed so that scratching is a rare event when compared to
removable storage. At least anyone with a SCSI port on their Mac can use
your hard disk.

You may ask why I write this. Years ago I had a top of the line Syquest
270MB drive. It went through three repairs at APS and still wasn't
repaired. The $60 cartridges were permanently damaged, and not even a
service burough that had the 270MB drive could read the cartridges. Dust
had accumulated in the cartridge in spite of the fact that I always kept the
cartridges in the nice box that came with them. Whenever I put the
cartridge in the drive it repeatedly told me it couldn't read the cartridge,
and sounded as though it was skipping on a single track. Now with CD-R I
haven't faced those problems, and it works perfectly. I also have noticed a
plethora of trouble reports with removable storage on the Digest, and
thought I'd put some light on the subject.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Subject: (Q) Easy View and Digester no longer work

Dear comp.sys.mac.digest readers,
It appears that the e-mail version of the digest comes in, incomplete, and
the version that gets posted at the Tudelft mirror is also incomplete for
some Digests. I download the info-mac archive version of the
comp.sys.mac.digest and see the whole file is there, but when I run Digester
or Easy View on it, both fail to parse it properly. So my question is, who
makes a software that currently properly parses all of the digest regardless
of whether it comes in via e-mail, ftp, or newsgroup?

Thank you.

Choose the "Autoformat As You Type" tab. In the middle is the "Replace As

Yes, hyperlinks can be turned off in Word 98.
You're right though, it is not very well documented.
Open the "AutoCorrect" widow (under the Tools menu) and choose the
"AutoFormat" tab. Then in the "Replace" section deselect "Internet paths
with hyperlinks".

To elaborate on my earlier post, I discovered how to permanently turn off
automatic hyperlinking of email addresses and URLs:

1. Select "Autocorrect..." from the "Tools" menu.

2. Cilck on the "AutoFormat as You Type" tab.

3. Uncheck the "Internet paths with hyperlinks" box.

Subject: Advice for the Port-deprived?

I have two printers, a modem, a QuickCam, and a MIDI keyboard. I also have,=
as a result of a garage sale of sorts, one of those Hustler (NuBus) cards=
that give you two extra serial ports. Since the MIDI controller has a=
pass-through and a switch, and since I don't use the MIDI keyboard very=
often, that ought to be sufficient. Except...

The Hustler card is said to provide the extra ports to "any applications=
which call upon the communications toolbox". Annoyingly, though, that does=
not seem to include the Chooser: the dialog for picking out a printer=
continues to supply only the choice of modem or printer port :-(

Oh, and it also doesn't seem to include the Connectix QuickCam software. Or=
 the MIDI software I'm using.

Essentially, the only software I have that can recognize the Hustler ports=
are applications and control panels that seek a modem. The PPP Control=
Panel, for example, sees it and uses it just fine. So the modem goes on=
one of the Hustler ports, my two printers go on the printer and modem=
ports, respectively (and the QuickCam and the MIDI thingie are accessible=
only via an A/B switch that robs me of one of the printers). The other=
Hustler port sits empty, since, having only one phone line, I have no use=
for a second modem, and nothing that is not a modem seems to find the=
Hustler port to be of any use.

Oh, except that my FileMaker Pro address book & contact management thingie=
is set up to auto-dial phone numbers, and although the Preferences dialog=
indicates that FMPro *sees* the Hustler card ports, when I try to use the=
dialing scripts, it hangs and requires a force-quit (not the nicest thing=
to do in an FMPro database).

Well, HECK!!!

I always assumed a hardware solution was the way to go, and sort of sneered=
at those software-based port-juggling devices you always see advertised in=
MacWarehouse and Mac Zone and other such catalogs. But how much worse can=
 they be?

I am soliciting feedback from anyone who has a "Q" or PortSplitter or=
PortJuggler or some other device that consists of a switch and some=
software to do the switching; I want to know how reliable and compatible=
these things are. (I assume since they each depend on only one real Mac=
port you can't have the simultaneous use of more than one device connected=
to them, but correct me if I'm wrong).

=46or the sake of even-handedness, I'd also like to know if the more recent=
hardware solutions (PCI extra-serial-port cards) are as rife with=
compatibility problems as this old Hustler card is.

If there seems to be enough interest in the subject, I'll post a summary of=
 responses to the list.

Subject: Appearance Control (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
At long last Apple has included in the Desktop Pictures part of the
Appearance Control Panel the ability to read GIF files in MacOS 8.5. But
strange as it may seem there is no contextual menu addon that allows you to
"Set as Wallpaper" with Netscape and Internet Explorer, even though that has
been an ability of Windows 95 and NT for the longest time. Please somebody
write a contextual menu plugin that allows one to automatically set the
wallpaper from a GIF that is displayed in the web browser. If such a beast
exists already, please let me know where to find it?

Also it would be great if the Appearance control panel could be made to read
Kaleidoscope schemes. Anybody interested in making such a program?

Thank you.

I have learned to ignore the messages from AOL, never follow its
instructions, and never let AOL set the TCP/IP configuration itself.

Before dialing out using AOL, I manually set the TCP/IP configuration to
AOL's. After using AOL, I manually reset the TCP/IP configuration myself.

Since I started doing that, I haven't had any problems. Before I started
doing that, I often had to reboot at least once either before or after
using AOL.

Subject: Can't Dock My PowerBook

I recently received a 100 mh PowerBook 5300 at work and SCSI-docked it
to my desktop Mac to transfer files. Then I pruned unnecessary items
from the 5300's system folder. Since then I have been unable to dock
the 5300 to the desktop Mac. The disk won't mount on the desktop. The
Silverlining Lite control panel on the desktop Mac will detect the 5300
in the SCSI chain, but won't let me mount it. (Disabling Silverlining
Lite makes no difference.) I zapped the PRAM on the 5300, reset the
power manager, clean-installed the System software (7.5.2 updated to
7.5.5), all to no avail.

I *can* dock a different PowerBook to my desktop Mac. Conversely, I
tried to dock the 5300 to a different desktop Mac to no avail. So it
seems that my cables are all OK and that the desktop Mac is not the
culprit. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks.

Maybe one day I'll learn to leave well enough alone.

Subject: Can't tap-and-drag on PB trackpad

I own a PowerBook 190, which is equipped with a trackpad. One of the
neatest things about the trackpad is the ability to drag icons around
the desktop or make menu selections by tapping twice on the pad with
your finger, which is the equivalent of clicking-and-holding the
trackpad button, but far less cumbersome.

I recently received a 100 mh PowerBook 5300 at work. This machine also
has a trackpad. But double-tapping on the pad does nothing. The
trackpad control panel (System 7.5.2) does not contain the third pane
which on my 190 allows me to activate double-tapping. However, a
clean-install of System 7.5.5 made no difference--the control panel is
still two-paned. My 190 trackpad double-tapped A-OK under 7.5.2, 7.5.5,
8.0 and currently, 8.1, and the trackpad control panel always showed all
three panes regardless of the system software I was using. Any ideas?
Could it be that this series of 5300 just doesn't support
double-tapping? Or could it be a malfunction of the trackpad? Thanks.

I am not sure what your exact problem is, but if you haven't already
upgraded to Eudora 4.02 then you should do that. Eudora 4.0 has some bugs
and that might be the problem.

I don't know what you have tried. First the Desktop control panel needs
to be in the active control panels. It could be turned off by Extension
Manager or Conflict Catcher if you are using or have varied sets from the
original. The Desktop control panel is an application and must be
launched. Then you have to select one of the buttons on the left to
select and or set 'either the desktop pattern or the desktop picture".
(I chose not use pictures to speed up my system.) Once having selected
the desktop picture option you can look at your list of pictures
available in the folder installed by OS8x. Additionally yu can add your
own pictures (usually Jpeg) to this folder to be selectable. After
selecting how you would like it to appear via the drop down menu, pick
the picture and click the set desktop button. From then on this should
become your main desktop view with the pattern previously selected for
the pattern you see when a winddow is wiped.

Learning is what is left after you have forgotten the rest!

We're working on an Ethernet network with 3 Macs: a 7600/132, a 8500/120

The network relies on a Genius GH4080 8-port 10Base-T Ethernet hub that
links directly the G3 and the 8500 via RJ45 cables, while the 7600 (and a

The problem is with the G3.
While the 7600, 8500 and the PS printer works, the link to the G3 is

Subject: FreePPP on MacOS 8.5

FreePPP and/or PPP Menu are causing a tremendous storage leak
under MacOS 8.5, that was not there under MacOS 8.1. This is
very annoying.

The problem may be with PPP Menu; I will find out when I get back home.
If so, then I can continue to use Free PPP and start it from the Control Panel.

I wouldn't mind using OT/PPP/Remote Access -if- there were an easy way
to generate the connection script I need to talk to my "ISP". (A friend with
an ISDN line serves as my ISP. He is running Unix, so I am on my own to
work out the connection script. Apple's standard response about the problems
with connection scripts is "get it from your ISP".)

Subject: Graphics may disappear from Word 98 documents

Today I printed a Word 98 document and all the graphics were replaced with
blank frames with a big red X. I called Microsoft help and was told that
this was related to running out of memory. They asked how much memory I
had allocated to Word and when I said 12000K, the tech support person
recommended 20000K or more if the document was large. This came as a shock
to me because my document was a whopping 170K.

The important thing is that once Word replaces the graphics with the Big
Red X, the graphics are gone!!!. There is no warning that this is
happening and if you use autosave without realizing you've been hit by the
Big Red X, your graphics can disappear for good without any intervention
from you. The tech support person had two suggestions:

(1) uncheck the "allow fast saves" box under Preferences - this is not
guaranteed to help but fast saves will increase file size and has been
connected to other content trashing

(2) apply the update for Mac OS 8.5 even if you haven't upgraded the OS -
besides 8.5 compatibility issues, there are a number of other bug fixes.

If you get the Big Red X, try opening older versions of the file if you
have any. But be warned that if this memory problem occurs and the old
file is somehow saved, you can lose the graphics in that file too. The
safest approach is to give Word gobs of memory when trying to resurrect
trashed items and disable autosave to make sure you don't accidentally
cause more damage.

I have seen other strange and unpredictable behavior with Word and
Powerpoint when these had memory problems, and usually quitting and getting
back in (sometimes with rebooting to reclaim memory that disappeared)
corrects the problem. But this is the first instance of unpredictable data
loss.

Be careful out there!

Hello, I work for a local ISP. We just took over a small, one town business
and are currently reaching out to other communities. We are starting to
deal with Mac users who wish to sign up with us, but unfortunaly, only a
couple of employees have (very limited) knowledge of Mac opperating systems.
It is my understanding that Mac's have different opperating system set-ups
depending on how new it is. This makes it very difficult to set up
tutorials for new users or even just tell them how to set up a connection to
us. I am hoping there are a few dedicated Mac useres out there who can tell
me where I might locate some support materrial and/or tutorials (mainly for
setting up internet connection, but anything would be helpful until we are
able to get a Mac support staff). Screen shots of setting up a connection
would be exelent help.

Phil:
We have a FileMaker Pro db served up to our intranet through Tango and a
couple times a year we export it and pour it into XPress. Quark XPress can
use tags sort of like SGML or HTML to specify formatting. You can put
universal fields in FM Pro db to contain some of these formatting tags. I'm
afraid DB III isn't on my planet. I do the FM end of things but not the
XPress stuff so I can't give you specifics of how those style tags work. I
suggest breaking down and R'ing TFM regarding style tags.
Maybe someone else on the list knows about those tags.

That's how you do it if you want to read the TidBITS issues using Easy
View, but since TidBITS files are just straight text files, you can open
them in anything that can open text files (without conversion).

The reason the files seem to belong to Easy View is that Internet Config
has an incorrect mapping for .etx files. Easy View is a file viewer, and
the ONLY files that belong to it are the index files it creates. All other
.etx files should be associated with a text editor like BBEdit or
SimpleText. If you go into Internet Config, you can change the .etx mapping
to ttxt instead of ezVu (or whatever Easy View is).

cheers... -Adam

Easy View WILL open them, but not directly. You must put the .etx file
in the same folder with the "Digests" Easy View template (document),
then open the Digests EV template, not the text file itself. Any
setext files in that folder will then display by article within issue.

Incidentally, Easy View is a terrific way to view Info-Mac Digests,
too. Put the digests into the folder with the Info-Mac template and
open the template.

The setext documents don't require any special naming convention; they
just must be plain text documents formatted according to setext
standards (TidBITS and Info-Mac digests are, together with most other
listserv digests).

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Subject: Need Advice for Monitor Purchase

Hello,

My beloved performa 400 can no longer keep up, so I'm making the jump to
a 333 Mhz G3. I am looking at 3 different monitors, and would like to
have any advice from the Info-Mac'ers about what would be the best
purchase. I'll be using it for web design (not business really, personal
or some work at home), I don't need super high resolution for games, but
want a really nice clear crisp, "high" resolution picture. I am looking
in the $300-$400 range for 17" (16" viewable) monitors and have come up
with:

Viewsonic GS771 (the s is for "short depth", footprint the size of a 14"
monitor)
.27 dot pitch
1280 X 1024 max resolution
about $380 at MacZone

Optiquest (a division of ViewSonic) V73
.26 dot pitch
1,280 x 1,024 max resolution
about $320 at MacZone

Optiquest V75
.26 dot pitch
1,600 x 1,200 max resolution
about $380 at MacZone

I have a ViewSonic at work on a PC, and like it. Other than that, they
are all comparable wrt emissions, screen coating/anti-glare, controls,
etc. I'm sort of tending to go with the Optiquest V75, but don't know
that I need that resolution (maybe the Otiquest V73 will be just as
nice, and I'll save $60). But I don't know much about the reputation of
Optiquest vs ViewSonic. In some old MacWorld reviews, the Optiquest
monitors got some very good reviews, especially for quality for the
price.

I would appreciate any advice (even recommendations for a different
manufacturer) and any comments. If I get a lot of responses at home that
don't get posted to the list too, I'll send in a summary.

TIA,

I've got Connectix' VirtualPC and I'm quite satisfied with it. I've
got a 7600/132. When I first ran it I was only equipped with 32 Mb of
RAM and was using virtual memory to pad it out. This really hurt
performance. Virtual PC needs real RAM amd lots of it. I've now got
80Mb, virtual is turned off and I give virtualPC about 32Mb of RAM to
play with. Now it feels like a low-end 486. Not bad for occaisional
use. If you're getting a new G3 with a fair bit of RAM then I'm sure
you'll be satisfied with it. I installed it on a 300MHx G3 last week
and I was pretty sure I was sitting in front of a real PC. The current
version of VPC is 2.1 which seems pretty compatible with everything.
I've got it set up to dial into my ISP and use my account and use
other modem software too. It even starts up and shuts down faster than
an actual PC cam. You can also have multiple soft HD files and install
different OS's on them. You can run Win 3.1, '95, '98, NT, OS/2, and
OpenStep from different HD files. Try that with a real PC!

BTW, if you're going to run FileMaker Pro, run the Mac version; it's
better and the files are useable cross-platform.
